Eats Everything
Dan, you launched your ‘Fries With That’ album with Boiler Room in a chip shop earlier this year. What is your perfect Friday night fish and chip supper?
Hmmm, tough one but I would have to say that my absolute favourite would be a large cod with gluten-free batter, Tartare Sauce, regular chips with curry sauce and salt ‘n’ vinegar from Farrows Fish & Chips, the very plaice (get it!) where we filmed Boiler Room.
Can you please tell us the full details of the eating cactus whilst on acid story…
How the hell do you know about this?! Well, it’s pretty straightforward. I was about 15 or 16 years old and decided to do acid at a friends house party! I started eating stuff like tea bags, coffee etc. as you do, saw a cactus and thought in my infinite wisdom it would be a great idea to eat it. It was one of the really furry spiny ones, I just bit straight into the top, and chewed until I could swallow it. I have to say it was the single most foul thing I have ever eaten and spent the entire day picking spines out of my mouth and cheeks. Not fun.
Your favourite record you put on in the morning to start the day with a smile…
N.E.R.D – Things Are Getting Better is a lovely happy morning song that will set you up for the day.
You are moving to Ibiza for the summer in a few weeks. The island is quickly becoming one of the food capitals of Europe, every major chef is opening up here. If you could have a master-class with any celebrity chef who would you pick and why…?
I think it would have to be Jamie Oliver. I know a lot of people think he’s a bit of an idiot, but i think he’s sound, cooks a damn good meal and is a very decent human being! I like the fact that his food isn’t too over fancy and looks really tasty. He also looks like you could have a laugh with him, which is more than you can say about a lot of celebrity chefs.
Tell us a few suggestions for the tune of the summer 2015?
I wouldn’t even know where to start. There are a couple of killer records by the mysterious Lord Leopard and I think that Andre Hommen – Battery Park will get a good rinsing by a lot of people this year. Perhaps a couple of my own records might do alright too, but to be honest, it’s anyone’s title at the moment…
Two restaurants that I know you love are Sa Capella and Amante in Ibiza. What is it about these two restaurants that you love so much…?
I love Sa Capella because of the ambience and the way the staff treat you. It’s a very upmarket and relatively expensive place, but the team there are so friendly and fun (order the crepe suzette and you’ll find out!), and the food really is to die for. Amante is completely different to Sa Capella, I got married there and the location is amazing along with the food. It’s the kind of restaurant where you can eat lunch and then hang out all day. Lovely place
The best bar on the white isle to grab a drink at?
For upmarket vibes and killer cocktails it’s hard to see past Blue Marlin to be honest, they serve some of the best cocktails I have ever had in there. Then, if you are into a more “rural” and “local” setting Bar Cruze in San Rafael is a wicked place to go to once all the raves have stopped. They are very “accommodating” to the ravers needs shall we say!
Your Edible Pets brand goes from strength to strength, recent weeks has seen you hit Miami and London run in conjunction with Catz ‘N Dogz. Next stop is Spanish soil at the Ker Club in Barcelona with special guests KINK in June. What is the plan for Edible?
Edible is basically an outlet for me to expand my horizons by putting on parties and releasing records etc. It’s nice to have a sideline to make things more universal.
What is the funniest food gift a fan has ever given you?
I get given a lot of food gifts but the best would have been a Big Mac I was given somewhere alone the line because I hadn’t eaten for two days and was absolutely starving!
There are a lot of DJs who love to cook. DJ Sneak, Ben Pearce, Claude Vonstroke and Paul Oakenfold are all huge kings of the kitchen. What spinner has ever cooked you the best meal?
I would have to say that Amos of Waifs & Strays is a great chef and has made me many an awesome meal. Wonderful cook.
Your favourite meal EVER is Beef Stroganoff. Would you ever eat it in the blazing Ibiza sunshine?
How do you know all this about me?? I would eat Beef Stroganoff 10 times a day come rain or shine.
What Hollywood actor would you want to play you in your life story?
My lookalike, Brad Pitt, obviously.
When I first met you back in 1999 you were always popping in to shops to buy a packet of Cheesestrings. Have you moved on from this hideousness yet?
I love Cheesestrings. Always have, always will.
What is the last meal you cooked for your family or friends?
I made my wife Sea Bass with mixed greens yesterday night.
You are called Eats Everything. A genius name. Is there a memorable or famous story that gave you the inspiration to christen yourself this?
It’s basically because I (used to) eat a lot and play everything. Simple as that.
You are having a dinner party. Who are the 5 celebrities dead or alive you invite?
Leslie Nielsen, Alex Ferguson, Goldie Hawn, Bob Carolgees and Spit The Dog.
And what album would be playing in the background?
Leftism by Leftfield.
Your festival food nightmare experience…
I once ate too much acid…
And finally Dan. How would you feel about an image conscious female DJ coming out and calling herself Eats Nothing? Would that piss you off? And would you consider a back to back set?
I would embrace it and her with open arms, obviously. Share the love.
