Judge Jules and Amanda
LoveFoodIbiza checks in with two of Ibiza’s greatest ever residents who live, breathe and love this magical little white island.
Your favourite record you put on in the morning to start the day with a smile…
Our favourite records to start the day with a smile have to be ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’ by Roy Ayers or ‘Bring It Back’ by Moloko. These have the summer feel good factor.
Breakfast in Ibiza would be taken at where…and would be the perfect plate?
Either coffee with a plate of manchego cheeses and fresh Mango on our terrace overlooking the beautiful Med or our regular haunt Rita’s Cantina in the port of San Antonio. Easily the best fresh orange juice on the island with crispy Pan Con Tomate or the Norwegian sandwich of fresh scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and chives. Delicious.
What dish reminds you of your childhood?
Amanda – A simple roast dinner will always remind me of my youth. I know everyone says the same about their own mother, but nobody cooks a roast chicken and potatoes like my Mum.
Jules – Yogurt Jelly – had it for desert every day. A combination of yogurt and jelly.
Best tapas on the island…
Can Tixedo Art Café in the countryside of Buscastel. A blackboard with the menu is brought to your table. Food served is a combo of traditional tapas and tapas fusion.
The best cocktails in Ibiza can be found at…
Mambo for sure at sunset. Best Mojitos on the island.
Dinner on a budget…
Can Pilot in San Rafel. Sliced Ox meat on your own sizzling grill. Just add padron peppers.
Dinner on no budget…
Las Dos Lunas or Ama Lur in Santa Getrudis. Beautiful fish dishes and wines.
Has a DJ ever surprised you with their cooking and what did they cook?
Jules has surprised me with his cooking – he’s almost as talented as his uncle Rick. Cooks an amazing Thai Prawn Red Curry and Malaysian Nasi Goreng. His specialty is Asian food and he always buys the authentic natural ingredients from the local Asian supermarket.
After club chill at…
After club chill is always at home, at our villa on the terrace watching the sun rise over the hills and valleys.
The finest host in Ibiza?
The best host on the island has to be the Maitre D at Las Dos Lunas. I’m not sure if he’s still there as we haven’t been recently. He was incredibly charming and always claims he has arranged the moon and stars to be in the perfect position as we sit at our table.
Who is the best cook in your household and what are some of your signature dishes…
Amanda – My signature dish is Thai Larb chicken – minced chicken stir fried with onions, garlic, fresh chillies and Thai sweet basil with fresh chopped vegetables in oyster sauce served with Quinoa rice. Jules’ dish is Monkfish Yellow Curry with snow peas and fresh chillies.
Apart from your uncle Rick Stein, if you could have a celebrity master chef lesson, who would it be with and why?
Amanda – Mary Berry as I’d love to learn how to bake cakes. I’m useless with the oven.
Jules – Executive Head Chef Tong Chee Hwee at Hakkasan. Jules loves his dedication to Chinese cuisine and he has achieved numerous awards including multiple Michelin stars at Hakkasan locations across the world.
Best sushi in Ibiza
Best sushi – Kama Sushi at Savannah on the sunset strip. The best salmon sashimi and crab hand rolls overlooking the sea with chilled tunes to relax to.
A dish you just cannot eat…
We just can’t do McDonalds or Burger King – any fast food in general.
Your favourite picnic beach…
Our favourite picnic beach would be our local beaches – Cala Gracio or Cala Salada, especially in the winter on Sundays when all the families take their mini BBQ’s and the kids all play together.
A record that always reminds you of Ibiza…
Definitely ‘Starlight’ by The Supermen Lovers.
The most delicious paella is where…
The most delicious Paella we’ve ever had is at Can Pujol, right on the beach with tables literally touching the water, just around the bay of San Antonio. We especially love the black squid ink rice, just don’t look at your tongue afterwards.
Some of your favourite restaurants from around the world…
These include Blues – Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia for seafood, Pink Pepper Thai in West Hollywood, Baisakki in Mallorca for the best in modern Indian food and May May in Singapore (below) for some awesome modern Asian fusion cusine.
An album you love driving around Ibiza listening to…
We listen to The Doors and The Beatles as well as all the Café del Mar albums from the last 15 years whilst driving around the island.
The best pizza in Ibiza is at…
Has to be Restaurant Es Pueto. It’s a great location, right on the beach.
The best Hierbas on the island…
The best Hierbas on the island belongs to ‘The Mambo Hierbas’. They have their own brand which goes down a treat!
The perfect 24 hours in Ibiza away from a club would be…
Breakfast in the port with the local papers followed by a cruise around the island, out to Es Vedra and Formentera, swimming in the sea and soaking up the rays before heading back to Cala Bassa Beach Club for cocktails in the late afternoon. After getting changed, cocktails at Café Del Mar and a drive into the country for a fish dinner at Ama Lur and finally crashing out at home in the villa with air conditioning!
